What might you see?

There are about 25 different types of dolphin and whale which have been seen around the British Isles. Some of these are quite common and you might see them anywhere.

Where can you go?

We see Harbour Porpoise regularly at the mouth of the River Humber, Flamborough Head and in the Moray Firth but they are seen almost everywhere. They are rarely seen in the English Channel and Irish Sea.

There are Bottlenose Dolphins living in the Moray Firth (Scotland), Cardigan Bay (Wales) and they are seen regularly by the Durlston Coastwatch near Swanage in Dorset. A friendly wild dolphin called Dorad or Funghie is seen almost every day in Dingle Bay in Southern Ireland (Eire).

Different types of dolphins, as well as whales and porpoises are regularly seen around the Hebrides (which are also known as the Western Isles of Scotland.) Cornwall also seems to be a good area.
Keep your eyes open. You might see them anywhere!

Make a Dolphin Spotters Guide!

You will need: an atlas and a blank map of the British Isles. (If you are really clever you could probably draw or trace your own!)
Remember! Southern Ireland (Eire) is part of the British Isles but is not one of the countries in the United Kingdom.

Mark and label your town or city on the map.
Add the capital of each country - London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast and Dublin.

Mark and label the River Trent, River Thames and River Severn.

Mark and label the Grampian Mountains, Pennines, Lake District, Cambrian Mountains.
